Pre-Education: Programs Leading to Ohio Teacher Licensure

Pre-Education

To become a teacher in Ohio, you first need to complete a teacher licensure program and achieve passing scores on the PRAXIS II National Teacher Exams. At Ohio State, most students complete their licensure program through a master's level program. However, a number of baccalaureate licensure programs are available, including:

  • Agricultural Education
  • Dance Education
  • Family and Consumer Sciences Education
  • Music Education
  • Business Education
  • Technology Education
  • Special Education
  • Physical Education

Undergraduate Preparation

Students pursuing a Master of Education (M.Ed.) program should major in an area related to their teaching interests, though any major is possible provided that the student has completed the prerequisite courses for the particular M.Ed. program to which he/she is applying. Pre-Licensure Major Programs

The following is a list of specific teaching licenses and the typical major programs students pursue. Students interested in areas and majors not listed below should contact a pre-education advisor about tailoring their academic area of interest to pursuing a career in education.

Art Education (Pre-K to Grade 12)

  • Art Education major

Early Childhood (Pre-K to Grade 3)

  • Early Childhood Development and Education option of the Human Development and Family Science major
  • Psychology, English, or other major, plus an Education minor
  • Special Education major (licensure)

Middle Childhood (Grades 4-9)

  • Interdisciplinary Middle Childhood Education major
  • Middle Childhood Development and Education option of the Human Development and Family Science major
  • Pre-education track of the English major with an Education minor (for students interested in teaching Reading and Language Arts, grades 4-9)

Drama Education

  • Theatre major

Integrated Language Arts

  • Pre-education track of the English major

Foreign Language

  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Hebrew
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Latin
  • Spanish
  • Swahili
  • Russian

Integrated Mathematics

  • Mathematics major

Integrated Social Studies

  • Minor in Geography and one of the following majors: History, Political Science, Personalized Study Program (PSP).
